The Warfel Story.

In 1911, David S. Warfel started out with a toolbox, a pick-up truck and a dream. Little did he know that over nine decades and three generations later, the modest two man operation he founded would become one of the most successful and well respected contracting firms in south-central Pennsylvania. The past 97 years have brought about many changes for Warfel, with each decade presenting its own challenges and fortunes. D.S. Warfel laid the strong foundation upon which this company was built - providing quality construction with professionalism, honesty, and integrity. These were the standards by which D. S. Warfel lived, and which will continue to lead his company through 21st century.

The beginning of his building legacy started when D.S. Warfel and his friend Harry W. Peters took their first job constructing a small church in downtown Lancaster. (Photo below)

A reputation for good work and fair prices quickly brought about many referrals. During these early years and into the 20's, the company grew and prospered as they learned more about the business and gradually took on larger projects.

The late 1920's brought about some impressive projects for the young firm, including the new Pennsylvania Railroad Station in Lancaster (photo below). Built for $517,000 this exorbitant investment was almost unheard of in the area at that time.

In 1936 at the height of the depression Warfel received go ahead to build the new $900,000 McCaskey High School (which was the largest high school to be built in PA at the time).

During war time in the 40s, commercial work was almost nonexistent due to the shortage in building materials. D. S. Warfel focused on the residential market through these years. Homebuilding utilized materials not critical for war, plus it allowed him to keep his men working during this rough time. Over 300 homes were built by the company during the 40's and 50's.

The 50's and 60's brought about unending school construction while industry was booming with plant expansions and new facilities popping-up all over the county.

Warfel Today.

In 1971, the firm took on its present day name of Warfel Construction Company. The 70's and 80's led Warfel to its current specialties - performing mostly educational, healthcare, commercial work. Also during this time, Warfel stepped to the forefront of the industry by providing construction management and design build services as well as general contracting services. Through the past two decades revenues soared and business has spread throughout Pennsylvania, and the surrounding states.

Looking toward the future, President and CEO Ralph Simpson states, "It is not our goal to be the largest contractor in the area. Rather, we plan to stay focused on the type of work we do best and concentrate on ways to better serve our customers." A brief look at the Warfel portfolio proves that repeat business is the best testament to the Warfel commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.

Over the past twenty years, more than 50% of Warfel's business has been performed for past clients. Ralph Simpson comments on this extraordinary fact. "We are very proud of our reputation and client loyalty. Hopefully we can continue this great Warfel tradition for many decades to come."
